Wayne Rooney Named England Captain

Roy Hodgson is expected to announce the appointment of Manchester United and England superstar striker, Wayne Rooney as the new England captain.

Rooney who has 90 caps will replace former England captain, Steven Gerrard who retired from international football after England fell out of the World Cup tournament at the Group Stage. Gerrard, 34, is the current FC Liverpool captain.

Twenty-eight year old Rooney has recently been named Manchester United captain by new United manager Louis van Gaal to replace Nemanja Vidic, who transferred to Inter Milan.

England battle Norway at Wembley Stadium on September 3rd in a friendly and then travel to Switzerland to launch their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign on 8 September.

England will be without Frank Lampard who is on loan at Man City from New York City FC. Lampard announced his international retirement this summer after winning 106 caps.
